Sandman Slim * Richard Kadrey * Sandman Slim #1

Sentenced to Hell alive by a traitorous circle of occult magic partners, a hyper-violent sorcerer spends eleven brutal years fighting in the underworld arenas before staging a bloody prison break back to modern Los Angeles to hunt down his lover's killers.

The Story: Written by prominent cyberpunk icon, urban fantasy pioneer, and acclaimed author Richard Kadrey, this celebrated 2009 franchise starter stands as a gritty, cigarette-burned landmark in contemporary speculative fiction. The narrative steps cleanly away from the polite, formulaic patterns of traditional supernatural romances or clean vampire procedurals. Instead, Kadrey constructs a deeply atmospheric techno-noir nightmare that masterfully pairs classic hardboiled detective tropes with pitch-black heavy metal occultism, demonstrating that surviving the darkest corners of existence requires trading your human morals for a pair of twin knives and an absolute appetite for vengeance.

The plot introduces James Stark, nicknamed "Sandman Slim," a brilliant but reckless magician who returns to a rain-slicked, neon-choked Los Angeles through an open graveyard portal. Armed with a stolen angelic blade, a scarred body that heals at supernatural speeds, and a mind hollowing out from a decade of fighting demon gladiators, Stark runs an uncompromising, block-by-block tracking mission through Hollywood's occult underground. His timeline takes a sharp turn when he uncovers a massive, apocalyptic conspiracy involving rogue angels, localized zombie outbreaks, and an ancient magical artifact capable of shattering the barriers between Heaven and Hell.

Rather than acting as a standard hero, Stark functions as a relentless, high-stakes countdown of destruction against his former coven. Moving smoothly from greasy donut shops and late-night punk bars to the glittering, hidden penthouses of elite vampire tycoons, this pacy page-turner keeps the adrenaline at an absolute boil until its final, explosive warehouse confrontation. Published as an essential trade edition by Harper Voyager, this legendary international chart-topper anchors a thrilling, multi-book urban fantasy empire.

Perfect For: Fans of high-octane supernatural thrillers, gritty occult noir, and anti-hero action sagas; readers who enjoy the fast-paced, irreverent style of authors like Jim Butcher, Mike Carey, or Warren Ellis; and book collectors securing the definitive launch volume of a modern fantasy staple.
