The foundation of the Folklore of Ireland Society marked the beginning of the first organized effort to collect and study on a wide scale not only folktales but the Irish oral tradition. From the more than million and a half manuscript pages now on file in the archives of the Irish Folklore Commission, the chief archivist, Sean O'Sullivan, presents for the first time in English a representative collection of Gaelic folktales.
